Community Work

Here are some of the community programs Alex works with as well as the awards he has received for his service.

  • Creston Valley Hospital board: director-9 years.
  • Home Support Services board: director& chairman-6 years.
  • Kootenay Employment Society board: chairman-9yrs. & ongoing.
  • Cresteramics Society board (sheltered workshop individuals with disabilities): director-9yrs. & ongoing.
  • Creston & District Society for Community Living: director & chairman- 10yrs & ongoing.
  • Kootenay Society for Community Living (now Kootenay Region Society for Community Living): director-4yrs.
  • Erickson Golden Agers Housing Society: chairman -15yrs. & ongoing.
  • Creston & District Health Council: chairman-5yrs.
  • Creston Recreation Center Society board: director – 5yrs.
  • Central Kootenay Recreation Commission #3: chairman-10yrs.
  • Creston Swim Club: founder, managed & coached for 10 years.

  • Creston Soccer Club: founder, coached & played for 25 years.

  • Creston Minor Soccer club organization: founder & coach for 10yrs.

  • Kootenay Soccer League: manager for 20 years.
  • Creston Cross-Country ski club: founded in 1975 & was President until dissolution in 1995.
  • Kimberley Speed-skating Club: speed-skated for 22 years.
  • Creston Cycling Club: active member.
  • Creston Tennis Club: chairman, active member..
  • Creston Golf Club: active member.
  • Creston Valley Toastmasters Club: member for 28 yrs.& ongoing. President (2 terms) & Area Governor (2 terms). Presents a Toastmasters Speechcraft program to Prince Charles Secondary School Grade 11 students – a 6 week Public Speaking program.
  • Volunteer for the Therapeutic Activation Program for Seniors, known as TAPS: 5years & ongoing. Alex was instrumental in keeping the program going after Interior Health Authority discontinued the program. The building has been named the Nilsson TAPS Center.

  • Volunteer for the Therapeutic Riding Program: 2 years & ongoing.
  • Volunteer: “Friends of the Community Complex committee” chairman. Group campaigned for YES vote on Referendum. Successful outcome! Alex was very influential in bringing about this positive outcome!
  • Volunteer: Design Team for Creston Indoor Swimming pool & enhancement of existing recreational facility.
  • Volunteer: “Cultivating Creston”, Creston’s Integrated Community Sustainability Planning project initiated in 2011& ongoing.
